The Map Pack Is 3 Slots. Take One of Them.

On a phone, the 3 listings with the pins are the whole first screen. I have watched shops with 200 reviews sit in slot 7 because of a category and an address setting. We fix what actually ranks the pack, then tie every call from it to a booked job on one scoreboard, every week.

  • Business Profile, reviews, citations, and service-area pages, worked as one
  • Rank tracked across your whole service area, not from your own shop
  • Every Maps call and form traced to the job it produced
  • Your profile, your site, your data, in your name

Local search is 3 surfaces. The map pack decides the emergency call.

A homeowner with a dead system at 9 pm does not scroll. She calls the first listing that looks open, close, and trusted. Everything below is about being that listing.

The map pack

3 listings with pins above every other result. Ranked mostly on your primary category, proximity to the searcher, and prominence. This is where repair and no-heat calls get decided, and it is where most of the money in local SEO sits.

Your Business Profile

The listing itself: category, service area, hours, services, photos, Q and A, and the reviews and responses under it. It is the page most homeowners read before they ever see your website.

Local organic and AI answers

City and service-area pages, plus what ChatGPT and Google AI Mode say when someone asks who to call. Both pull from the same profile, reviews, and pages, so the work compounds.

What actually moves the map pack

Nobody outside Google knows the algorithm. Here is what the people who test it every day say.

  1. Your primary Business Profile category
  2. Proximity from where the homeowner is searching
  3. Keywords in the Business Profile name
  4. A physical address in the city being searched
  5. Being open at the moment of the search

High ratings score sixth, review quantity ninth, review recency eleventh. They matter. They are not the lever most owners have been sold. Google itself describes local results as relevance, distance, and prominence, and says more reviews and better ratings can help.

What we do, in order.

Diagnosis first. We do not touch the profile until we know what is holding it back and what could get it suspended.

01

Grid audit

Where you rank at every point across the service area, for repair, replacement, and maintenance searches, against the shops actually in the pack.

02

Profile

Primary category, service area, hours, services, attributes, and the suspension risks fixed before anything else.

03

Citations and NAP

Name, address, and phone made identical everywhere Google checks, duplicates removed, old numbers retired.

04

Service-area pages

One real page per town you actually serve, with local proof on it. No spun pages for towns you will not drive to.

05

Reviews

A steady engine after every job, responded to by a person, on the profiles homeowners read.

06

Local authority

Links and mentions from the places HVAC gets covered in your market: suppliers, associations, local press, sponsorships you already pay for.

07

Tracking

Maps calls, website calls, and forms tied to the listing, page, and search that produced them, then to the booked job.

Where do you drop out of the pack?

See Where I Rank

Then it repeats every 30 days against the numbers, not against a checklist.

The fastest way to lose your map rankings.

A visible address you should be hiding

If you are a service-area business, Google says hide the address and keep one profile for the central office. A virtual office is not eligible unless it is staffed during business hours. Ignoring this is one of the most common suspension triggers we see.

A service area you cannot actually drive

Google’s guidance is that the overall service area should not stretch more than about 2 hours’ driving time from your base. Owners who paint the whole state end up ranking nowhere and risking the profile.

Suspensions do not send a warning. The calls stop, and reinstatement takes as long as it takes. We would rather find these on the audit than on a Tuesday in July.

Reviews are ranking fuel and buying decision at the same time.

97%

of consumers read reviews for local businesses. 47% will not use a business with fewer than 20 reviews, and only 9% will use one with 5 or fewer.

Source: BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, February 11, 2026, panel of 1,002 US adult consumers. Consumer preferences, not ranking thresholds.

89%

expect the owner to respond. 50% are put off by templated responses, and 42% are unlikely to use a business that never responds at all.

Source: same BrightLocal survey.

45%

now use AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier. Google’s share as a source for reviews and recommendations fell from 83% to 71%.

Source: same BrightLocal survey. The 83% to 71% is Google’s share as a review source, not its share of all local search.

So we build the review engine into the job close-out, and we write the responses like a person wrote them, because both now feed the answer a homeowner reads before she ever sees your listing.

Installation intent, not traffic

The work went into the local searches that end in a system replacement, not the ones that end in a blog visit. That is the difference between a traffic report and a revenue number.

What it took there is not what it will take in your market. That is what the audit is for.

What you get every week.

  • Map pack rank tracked across a grid of your service area, not from 1 address.
  • Maps calls, website calls, and forms tied to the listing or page that produced them.
  • What a booked job from Maps and local search actually costs.
  • Your profile, your site, your analytics, in your name.
  • Strategy reviewed every 30 days against the numbers.
  • My cell. Account questions answered within 24 hours, usually minutes.

What local SEO will not do

It will not put you in the pack in a town 90 minutes from your shop. Proximity is not negotiable, and anyone promising the whole metro from 1 address is selling you a suspension. If you need to own a second city, we talk about a real second location, or we buy that reach with ads while the profile earns its ground.

Who you are working with

I have been doing HVAC search since 2009.

I left the 75th Ranger Regiment in 2005 and went straight into marketing, first as a link building director and then running SEO teams. I started working on HVAC in 2009 and it has been the focus since. I buy and help run HVAC companies as well as market them, so when we talk about what a booked job costs, I am reading the same scoreboard you are.

Send me your Business Profile link and your call log and I will tell you in a few messages whether the pack is the problem or the phones are. If I can help, I will say so. If the answer is that your profile is fine and something else is broken, I will say that too, and it costs you nothing either way.

You always have access to the CEO. Text me a question right now and see.

Where to go next.

Questions HVAC owners ask about local SEO.

Why do I rank at my shop but not across town?

Proximity is one of the strongest factors in the map pack, and your own phone is the worst place to check. We track rank across a grid of your whole service area so you see where you actually show up and where you disappear, and we work the towns that matter in order.

How long before the map pack moves?

Category, service area, and suspension-risk fixes can move the pack in weeks. Earning slots in competitive towns takes months of reviews, pages, and local mentions, and anyone who gives you a date is guessing. In the first 30 days you get the grid baseline, so you watch it move instead of waiting for a report.

Should I add keywords to my business name?

It ranks, and it is against Google’s guidelines, which is why it is also one of the common suspension triggers. We do not do it. We would rather you hold slot 2 for 5 years than slot 1 for 5 weeks.

Do I need a page for every town I serve?

Only where there is real search volume and you can actually serve the work. Thin pages spun up for 40 towns you do not cover are a liability, and Google’s own service-area guidance says not to stretch further than about 2 hours from your base.

Who owns the profile and the site?

You do. Business Profile, domain, hosting, code, analytics, and Search Console are in your name from day one. If we part ways, you keep all of it and nothing has to be rebuilt.

My profile got suspended. Can you fix it?

Often, and we start by finding what triggered it, because reinstating without fixing the cause gets you suspended again. Text me what the notice says and we go from there.

Can you do local SEO and leave my Google Ads alone?

Yes. One channel or all of them, same standards either way. We will still tell you what we see in the other ones.

What does it cost?

It depends on the market and what is in the way, and our fee is always separate from ad spend so you can see what you are paying for. We put the number in the proposal after the call, not before it.

Find out where you actually rank on the map.

Send us the market and the service area. We come back with where you show up, where you do not, and what is holding the 3 slots shut.
